Expert bio

Celestia Higano is a Professor of Medicine, Oncology, and Urology in the Departments of Medicine (Division of Oncology) and Urology at the University of Washington, in Seattle, WA, USA. In addition, she is a board-certified oncologist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), and a Member of the Clinical Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, both in Seattle.  

After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in Worcester, MA, USA, she undertook a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, in Rochester, MN, USA, before completing a fellowship in haematology/oncology at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  

She is a genitourinary oncologist who focuses on prostate cancer, with research interests in new drug development including immunotherapy, the effects of androgen deprivation therapy on the male body and mind, and development of supportive care/survivorship programmes for prostate cancer patients and their partners. She has been, since 2006, the University of Washington Principal Investigator for the Department of Defence Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium, and, since 2013, Medical Director for the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care Programme at the Vancouver Prostate Centre in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
