During the first 9 years of his medical career, Dr Gianotten was involved in surgery and obstetrics, and spent 5 and a half years as a tropical doctor in West and East Africa. Although originally trained as a gynaecologist, he was fascinated by the new field of sexology, so later changed career course to become a psychotherapist. He was particularly active in the developing fields of oncosexology and physical rehabilitation and specialised in gerontosexology and reproduction sexology.
Dr Gianotten is one of the founding members of the International Society for Sexuality and Cancer (ISSC) in 2002 and has been a speaker at many international events, including the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) Congress and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) World Cancer Congress. He was also Associate Secretary of the Executive Committee of WAS from 2009 to 2013. Dr Gianotten co-edited both the Textbook of Sexology (in Dutch) and, alongside Dr Cobi Reisman, Cancer, Intimacy and Sexuality; A Practical Approach (in English).
