Miguel Ramírez-Backhaus is an attending urologist at Instituto Valenciano Oncología (IVO), in Valencia Spain. He obtained his degree in 2001 (Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain) and completed his PhD in medical sciences at the Universidad de Valencia in 2008. He trained as a urologist at Hospital Universitario La Fe in Valencia (2003–2008). In 2008, he started an 8-month urology fellowship in minimally-invasive surgery at Universitätsklinikum in Leipzig, Germany. Dr Ramírez-Backhaus then joined the uro-oncology team at Hospital La Fe in Valencia and started the Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy Program in Hospital Universitario La Ribera, Valencia, before moving to IVO. In 2019, he became senior attending physician in the prostate cancer section at IVO. In terms of research, his areas of interest are prostate cancer and advances in technology and surgery.
Dr Ramírez-Backhaus is a member of the Spanish and European Urological Societies. He earned his Master’s degree in molecular oncology from the prestigious Centro Nacional Investigaciones Oncologicas in Madrid, Spain. He was elected for ESMO-ECCO-EORTC Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Fellowship in 2015 and took part in a ‘Challenge the experts’ session at the 25th European Urology Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 2016.
Dr Ramírez-Backhaus is a reviewer for a number relevant urology journals. He has been invited to perform live laparoscopic surgeries in several countries, including at the Challenges in Laparoscopy and Robotics meeting in Leipzig in 2018. He has presented at international Congresses, published 60 indexed papers and has moderated several sessions at European Association of Urology meetings.
