Álvaro Pinto is a medical oncologist in the Department of Medical Oncology at the University Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (IdiPAZ), in Madrid, Spain, and is, since 2008, Coordinator of the Urological Oncology Unit at the University Hospital La Paz in Madrid, Spain. He also serves as Director of the Urologic Oncology master’s degree programme at the Autonomous University of Madrid, in Madrid, Spain. Dr Pinto graduated in medicine from the University of Valladolid, in Valladolid, Spain, in 2002, before undertaking training in medical oncology at the University Hospital La Paz from 2003 to 2007. He completed his PhD at the Autonomous University of Madrid, in 2009, and subsequently worked as a researcher in the Translational Oncology Group at IdiPAZ.
Dr Pinto is actively involved in clinical trials, having been Principal Investigator of more than 50 clinical trials investigating urological tumours. He is an active member of several national and international scientific societies, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), the Spanish Oncology Genitourinary Group (SOGUG), and the Spanish Germ Cell Cancer Group (SGCCG).
Dr Pinto has published widely, with articles appearing in high-impact journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Treatment Reviews, the European Journal of Cancer, Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, and Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations. In addition, he has authored 17 book chapters in the fields of medical and urological oncology.
