Steven Joniau graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven in 2002. After a 1-year fellowship at the University Hospital of Wales (Cardiff, UK), he was appointed full-time Consultant Urologist at the University Hospitals Leuven, where he is Director of Uro-Oncology since 2010 and Head of Clinic since 2017. In July 2012, he earned his PhD degree in medical sciences with the thesis “High-risk localized prostate cancer: the role of surgery and the development of clinical outcome prediction models”.  He was appointed Assistant professor in 2013 and Associate Professor in 2018 at the Catholic University of Leuven.

Prof. Joniau is heavily involved in robotic-assisted and open uro-oncological surgery and in the multidisciplinary approach to pelvic cancers. He also leads numerous research projects at the University Hospitals Leuven, focussing on drug development, molecular imaging and biomarker research in high-risk prostate cancer, biomarker development for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, and staging and management of high-risk and oligo-metastatic prostate and bladder cancer. He is Doctoral Dissertation Supervisor of several PhD researchers at the KU Leuven.

Prof. Joniau is Founder and Chairman of Scientific Summits, a non-profit organization that coordinates national and international educational events in the field of urology. He is Founder and Vice-Chair of the European Multicenter Prostate Cancer Clinical and Translational research group (EMPaCT). He is a board member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Section of Oncologic Urology (ESOU) and the Belgian Society of Urology (BVU). Prof. Joniau has served as Scientific Secretary of the BVU (2013–2016), as Chair of the Renal Cell Carcinoma Group of the Young Academic Urologists (YAU) Working Party of the EAU (2011–2013), and as a member of the EAU Guideline Panel on Prostate Cancer (2006–2017) and the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) Prostate Cancer Guideline Panel (2012–2015). He is also a member of several international scientific societies, including the EAU, American Association of Urology (AUA), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), and European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Genito-Urinary Cancers Group (EORTC GUCG).

He is the appointed Associate Editor of Frontiers in Surgery – Genitourinary Surgery. He is a member of the editorial board of European Urology Oncology, Current Opinion in Urology, European Journal of Surgical Oncology, Translational Andrology and Urology, Central European Journal of Urology, Minerva Urologica e Nefrologica, Archivio Italiano di Urologia e Andrologia, and Archivos Españoles de Urología. In the past 15 years, Prof. Joniau has published more than 365 papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored several book chapters in the field of uro-oncology and minimally invasive surgery. He has served as invited Faculty in over 150 international congresses, including those of the European School of Urology (ESU).  

Prof. Joniau has received several international awards, of which First Prize in the Urological Challenge Session at the European Urology Forum 2010 (Davos, Switzerland) and the Crystal Matula Award at the EAU Annual Congress 2011 (Vienna, Austria) are the most prestigious. He was also awarded the Prize for the Best Paper published on Clinical Research in the Urological Literature at the EAU Annual Congress 2014 (Stockholm, Sweden).
